Study on Mongolian symbols on postage stamps
Title: Stamping Identity: Symbolism, Dialogic and the Other in Mongolian Philately - by Anja Reid

My cross-disciplinary Doctoral (PhD) thesis (near submission July 2008) concerns the relationships between cultural politics and symbolic appropriation at an elite level and the influences these may have on visual expressions of cultural identity. The case study investigates the contexts in which certain symbols/motifs were used on Mongolian postage stamps issued between 1924 and 1990, with additional reference to some issued after the collapse of the Soviet Union. The symbolisms are analysed in-depth against longer term socio-cultural and –historical practices, beliefs and values to determine the varying degrees by which even under the abrupt imposition of socialist ideology, a Mongol identity may have been maintained. Against the supposed authoritarian nature of a state subsidised postal institution, the thesis evaluates the strengths/limitations of internal/external forces on individual agency in the quest for reinforcing forms of Mongol cultural identity. More generally, the thesis offers an alternative approach by which to engage matters of identity-making or –seeking in any context.
The thesis title is Stamping Identity: Symbolism, Dialogic and the Other in Mongolian Philately and is one outcome of ten month’s fieldwork conducted in Mongolia in the year 2000. It has been a very productive and exciting journey and among others, I wish to thank all my Mongolian friends for helping to make it so.
I am most grateful to www.mongolianartist.com for allowing me to use a couple of photos from this website and congratulate them for their aim to make a cross-section of information about Mongolian culture more widely available.
